NIH SBIR Phase II

NIH SBIR Phase II provides up to $2 million over 2 years (FY2024 amount) for full R&D leading to commercialization. Requires successful Phase I award showing technical merit and feasibility. Direct-to-Phase-II is available for selected topics where Phase I work has been completed under other funding. Applications scored on significance, investigator, innovation, approach, environment. Most NIH institutes accept SBIR; the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and NHLBI run the largest device-relevant programs. Award rates around 16-22% in FY2024.
